We are the tenants

In this poem we can see that the Kapka Kassabova is trying to convey the idea of hopelessness. What Kassabova was trying to portray in this poem is how some people experience extreme poverty and how these people do not have the power to control over their lives. Kassabova had used a group of immigrants who had the expectation of the North Island as being a peaceful and an easy place to live. The director had used a wide range of figurative language features in order for the readers to have that image of how disappointing it was being in their position up in the North. The director had used simile: "The hills are packed like cement." in this line we see how the director had emphasised the image of what the characters expectation to North. In this poem Kassabova had provided a wide range of figurative languages so that the readers would understand what the characters life was like in the poem. He also managed to convey the image of how their life is like compared to others. As he explains how they did not have a permanent house and they always move house that's why he quoted that "Old mails piles up, their lives were temporary". This tells us that their lives were full of disappointment and how they are so hopeless. The ideas in this poem is like what is going on in time places in this world. As more people are living in a poverty and they are hopeless.

Comparing and Contrasting Two Texts

With close reference to the two texts, compare the ways the sea and the things associated with it are important in both texts "Lament" and "Dreamers".

The text Lament indicates the theme of grieving and this was shown by including variety of tones in order to help the readers understand the situation of the character in the poem. Glenn Colquhoun had applied language features such as similes, metaphor, personification, and repetition in order to emphasise the mood setting. Colquhoun had expressed the character in the poem by making the mood melancholic and has used the images and themes of the Sea. Whereas in the text Dreamers by Brian E Turner where it has the similar theme of coastal setting. Turner had also utilised the same language features in order to convey the melancholic tone.

Discussing & Annalysing

Lament

  • A lament is an expression of sadness. With close reference to the text, discuss the style used in the non-italicised section of the poem to convey this sadness.

  • By close reference to the text, analyse how the writer uses techniques to narrate the poem’s story in the italicised text.

The poem “Lament” conveys an expression of sadness in which Glenn Colquhoun uses different kinds of aspects to support his main purpose and idea. Colquhoun utilizes a variety of techniques to provide the readers some ideas in which helps them have a better understanding of what the poem is about. An example where Colquhoun uses a feature such as assonance and simile in the part where it says “The sea hides beneath his boat”. In this part of the poem it conveyed the idea of depression and loneliness of a person. The way that this was applied is to help the viewers feel what the character in that poem was going through. The intended audience for this poem is for those who have been going through melancholy and sadness. This is so people could relate and realise that it is not only them who are experiencing this kind of stuff.

Homelessness
14/11/2017

Who is affected?
More than 150,000 young people ask for help with homelessness every year. Causes of homelessness are family arguments, Relationship arguments, Or being told or kicked out of their home, family violence. Children that have nowhere to go or express their feelings are having problems with depression and anxiety. High rates of people that are homeless lost their job or have no one to go to. They can’t afford food, clean Water or a nice place to stay. they have to stay and they have to sleep on bridges, streets and dangerous alleyways.

What are the issue?
Food and shelter Insecurity:  The lack of shelter, coupled with food insecurity (not knowing where the next meal is coming from), only makes it more difficult for those experiencing homelessness to get back on their feet.
Health Care Insecurity :  Many people who are experiencing homelessness do have some sort of income. Since many people experiencing homelessness do not have a regular income, health care is more difficult to obtain. People who are spending their nights in homeless shelters, the streets, abandoned buildings, or even on the couch at a friend or family member’s home.
The homeless is going to have a hard time to get a job since they don’t have a proper place to stay with food clean water and  sleep.

When did it start?
The problem of homelessness at that period was a result of the King Philip’ War Of 1675-1676 against he native people. But as the war continued between the French and Indians, the securities of some families were threatened and forced many families to become refugees across the frontier areas like New England and New York. Many war veterans remained unemployed and others lost their properties to war and natural catastrophes, they spent most of their times in the streets.

How has it progressed?
The Progression of homelessness has slowly decreased and increased. Decreased because of all the company’s helping these there are in need for a cozy nonviolent house with fresh food and water
Increased because all the war and conflict in the world and people being involved in violent ways and treated differently to others and with bills and rates and wages for houses have gone up a lot of people can’t afford it and or have lost their job.

The Door.png

I was walking home one evening, just as the sun began to set behind the distant hills, I saw this strange village from a distance. Wearing my gucci sneakers and supreme jacket, I sprinted down the road. Breathing heavily, eager to explore this isolated town. Running, skipping, steps and a few more steps. I made it. As I was walking through the spooky village i saw a peculiar house. Reluctantly, I approached the house as my curiosity is killing me….

“The box. The door. The crumbling brick. It begged me to enter.”

So I entered…

Unexpectedly, the house was pretty inside with lots of colorful things. As dead as the outside was, the inside was alive. There was a boombox playing a whimsical tune,  a rainbow colored cake, assorted candies, glow in the dark objects and there were even toys! But my excitement stopped when i saw a red balloon. It made me think of creepy clowns that have white foundations on their faces, bulbous red nose, excessively applied red lipstick on their lips, sharp teeth, rainbow curly hairs and ugly costume. Yep, just exactly as Stephen King describes them. I thought to myself …

“Pennywise could be coming out behind my back any minute now”.

I scared myself to death. So i picked up one bag of sour patches lying on the floor and just started chewing some. The sour patches did not last long, but my fear of seeing a ghastly clown appearing out of
nowhere ready to stab me, did. I started wandering inside the house to stop myself from entertaining the horror in my head. I run around the dining,  ate more candies on the kitchen and played with the toys. Im exhausted. I lay down on a comfy looking couch.

It suddenly got cold...
I was planning to nap but the chilling air just brought the horror thoughts back in my head. I then heard soft cracks on the floor and distant creaks from the roof. I, once again, was dead scared.

I need to distract myself. I started walking and noticed that the room was getting darker. Shadows were creeping in, and the sound of the night can be heard.  Its past midnight. I remembered that I wandered off during sunset.

Darkness is my biggest fear. So I quickly tried to find something bright.

I walked towards the boombox. It was bright, colorful, filled with LED’s of different colors. It was playing a childish almost nursery-rhyme-ish music just minutes ago but it stopped. I have no idea how to play the music in it so I did not bother. I turned to my back, leaving the boombox, looking for something else to do. Two steps in…  I heard a sound....

“Cash me ousside how bow dah”

What the hell...

*trap beats play*

“How bow dah, How bow dah. Suede the remix god!”

This is  my jam. My mood completely changed as the lit music hyped me up. Next thing i know, i was dabbing and dancing with the boombox and completely forgot that I’m alone, past midnight, in a weird creepy house. What a night.
