We are the tenants

In this poem we can see that the Kapka Kassabova is trying to convey the idea of hopelessness. What Kassabova was trying to portray in this poem is how some people experience extreme poverty and how these people do not have the power to control over their lives. Kassabova had used a group of immigrants who had the expectation of the North Island as being a peaceful and an easy place to live. The director had used a wide range of figurative language features in order for the readers to have that image of how disappointing it was being in their position up in the North. The director had used simile: "The hills are packed like cement." in this line we see how the director had emphasised the image of what the characters expectation to North. In this poem Kassabova had provided a wide range of figurative languages so that the readers would understand what the characters life was like in the poem. He also managed to convey the image of how their life is like compared to others. As he explains how they did not have a permanent house and they always move house that's why he quoted that "Old mails piles up, their lives were temporary". This tells us that their lives were full of disappointment and how they are so hopeless. The ideas in this poem is like what is going on in time places in this world. As more people are living in a poverty and they are hopeless.

Comparing and Contrasting Two Texts

With close reference to the two texts, compare the ways the sea and the things associated with it are important in both texts "Lament" and "Dreamers".

The text Lament indicates the theme of grieving and this was shown by including variety of tones in order to help the readers understand the situation of the character in the poem. Glenn Colquhoun had applied language features such as similes, metaphor, personification, and repetition in order to emphasise the mood setting. Colquhoun had expressed the character in the poem by making the mood melancholic and has used the images and themes of the Sea. Whereas in the text Dreamers by Brian E Turner where it has the similar theme of coastal setting. Turner had also utilised the same language features in order to convey the melancholic tone.

Discussing & Annalysing

Lament

  • A lament is an expression of sadness. With close reference to the text, discuss the style used in the non-italicised section of the poem to convey this sadness.

  • By close reference to the text, analyse how the writer uses techniques to narrate the poem’s story in the italicised text.

The poem “Lament” conveys an expression of sadness in which Glenn Colquhoun uses different kinds of aspects to support his main purpose and idea. Colquhoun utilizes a variety of techniques to provide the readers some ideas in which helps them have a better understanding of what the poem is about. An example where Colquhoun uses a feature such as assonance and simile in the part where it says “The sea hides beneath his boat”. In this part of the poem it conveyed the idea of depression and loneliness of a person. The way that this was applied is to help the viewers feel what the character in that poem was going through. The intended audience for this poem is for those who have been going through melancholy and sadness. This is so people could relate and realise that it is not only them who are experiencing this kind of stuff.
